A Gaiwan is a traditional Han Chinese tea vessel consisting of three parts: a lid on top, a bowl in the middle, and a saucer at the bottom. In Sichuan, it is commonly used for brewing "Gaiwan tea." It is also known as the "Three Talents Bowl" or "Three Talents Cup," symbolizing the harmony of heaven (lid), humanity (bowl), and earth (saucer). The saucer is sometimes referred to as a "tea boat."
To prepare Gaiwan tea, first, rinse the Gaiwan with boiling water. Then, add tea leaves, pour in hot water, and cover with the lid. The steeping time varies based on the type and amount of tea, typically ranging from 20 seconds to 3 minutes. The Gaiwan originated in Sichuan during the Tang Dynasty and became popular in Beijing during the Qing Dynasty.
